If League of Legends freezes or fails to open the game after champion select, work through Riot’s troubleshooting steps from least disruptive to most: clean boot, check security-software blocks, update graphics drivers, disable Windows compatibility mode if enabled, repair the game in Riot Client, clear the game’s cache using Riot’s OS-specific instructions, then reinstall if needed. If the issue persists, gather the requested logs and contact Riot Player Support.
What the error means
The failure happens during the transition from champion select to the game. Riot’s support page specifically covers the game not opening its loading screen after champion selection and records the message “League of Legends(TM) Client not responding.” That message can appear alongside other symptoms, so include the exact wording you see when asking for help. Riot’s current launch troubleshooting guide addresses this transition; its recommended checks are troubleshooting options, not a diagnosis of your individual PC.
Riot’s separate article dated July 8, 2024 groups the exact client error with symptoms such as a stuck loading screen, login trouble, inability to select a champion or agent, and service disconnection messages. It identifies driver and antivirus interference as possible causes, not a universal explanation for every current failure. Riot’s exact-error guidance
Try these fixes in order
1. Perform a clean boot
Start Windows with only essential services and startup programs running, then test whether League launches after champion select. Riot recommends a clean boot to help identify interference from background software. If the game works, re-enable startup items and services selectively to find the conflicting program, rather than leaving your normal setup disabled.

2. Check security software
An antivirus, firewall, or security authenticator can sometimes block the Riot client or game. Check your security software’s alerts and exception settings, and use Riot’s current Windows guidance to add the relevant installed executables if they were blocked. The Windows exception list includes LeagueClient.exe, LeagueClientUx.exe, LeagueClientUxRenderer.exe, League of Legends.exe, RiotClientServices.exe, and Vanguard executables vgc.exe and vgm.exe. Use the actual installation paths on your computer; do not assume the files are in a default folder.
If you cannot add exceptions, Riot suggests temporarily disabling or uninstalling security software as a diagnostic. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent fix. Consult your security product’s documentation for its exception procedure.

3. Update the graphics driver
Install the current graphics driver for your hardware, then restart and test the game again. Riot’s July 2024 exact-error guidance also calls out outdated Intel integrated graphics drivers where applicable. That is a possible remedy for affected systems, not evidence that Intel graphics is the cause in every case.
4. Turn off Windows compatibility mode if it is enabled
Check the game executable’s Windows Properties and disable compatibility mode only if it is currently selected. These directions apply to Windows; do not look for the same setting on macOS.

5. Repair the game in Riot Client
Open Riot Client settings and use the repair option for League of Legends. Let the repair finish before launching another match. This built-in repair is a less sweeping step than clearing local data or reinstalling.
6. Clear the game’s local cache carefully
Riot’s cache-removal directions use a Windows AppData location. Follow Riot’s current instructions for your operating system and remove only the specified game cache. Do not delete unrelated folders or apply a Windows path on macOS.

7. Reinstall only if the earlier steps fail
Use Riot’s clean-reinstallation instructions as a last resort, after the checks, driver update, and repair have not resolved the launch failure. A reinstall is more disruptive than the earlier options and should not be the first step.

Contact Riot Player Support and attach the files it requests. Riot’s log guidance says the Riot Repair Tool collects information from the game folder relevant to an issue; support usually needs only one or two files. Log locations vary by operating system, so use the Windows instructions if you play on Windows rather than copying Mac paths.

On macOS, Riot lists RiotClient logs in ~/Library/Logs/Riot Games and LeagueClient logs in the game’s Contents/LoL/Logs/LeagueClient Logs directory. These logs cover launch through the end of champion select, including login-screen and champion-selection errors. Riot’s log collection guidance explains how to submit requested files with a support ticket.
In your ticket, provide your operating system, when the issue began, whether it occurs every match, the exact error text, and any recent graphics-driver or security-software changes. Include only the log files Riot asks for.
