The October 2024 New World Spear guides recommend Perforate and Skewer for PvE debuffs and damage over time, with Sweep for group knockdown or Vault Kick for a single-target stun. For PvP, they recommend Skewer and Vault Kick alongside Javelin for ranged control or Sweep as an alternative. These are dated build recommendations, not a verified current meta: New World: Aeternum was delisted on January 15, 2026, and its servers are scheduled to close on January 31, 2027.
How to read this 2024 build reference
The Icy Veins Spear guide and its separate PvE and PvP pages were last updated October 10, 2024. They describe a high-control weapon that can deal damage or serve as a secondary source of lockdown, debuffs, and bleeds. Crowd control and burst are strengths; a learning curve and reliance on ability cooldowns are trade-offs. Which Spear abilities should you use in PvE?
The October 2024 PvE setup takes Perforate and Skewer, then chooses Sweep or Vault Kick according to the encounter. Its aim is to apply weaken, Rend, and bleed effects while adding control.
- Perforate: the build’s key Rend source.
- Skewer: adds bleed pressure.
- Sweep: an area knockdown option when controlling a group is more useful than a single-target stun.
- Vault Kick: a single-target stun option when focused control is the priority.
Vault Kick or Sweep in PvE?
Choose Sweep when the group needs area crowd control; choose Vault Kick when a stun on one target better serves the fight. The guide also lists a Rapier–Spear DPS setup using Sweep or Vault Kick, Perforate, and Skewer, describing it as Thrust damage combined with damage-over-time effects and frequent ability use. Which Spear abilities should you use in PvP?
The October 2024 PvP setup pairs Skewer and Vault Kick with either Javelin or Sweep. Skewer supplies bleed pressure and a lunge; Vault Kick provides a stun that can open a combo.
- Javelin: a ranged throw that can knock down an opponent, including at close range. It calls for aim and timing; the guide characterizes the build as skill-intensive because landing the control matters.
- Sweep: an alternate knockdown route with a follow-up opportunity.
Javelin or Sweep in PvP?

What should you pair with Spear?
The PvP guide lists Sword and Shield, Hatchet, Rapier, and Bow combinations. The options serve different roles rather than defining one best pairing.

What does the Venom artifact do?
Venom is an in-game Spear artifact, not a physical product. In its April 23, 2024 artifact article, Amazon Game Studios described it as a chance reward from the Siren Queen Trial at Spire of Melpomene and listed these heavy-melee properties:
- Poison Tipped: heavy melee attacks with either weapon apply poison dealing 20% weapon damage for 5 seconds.
- Trenchant Crits: heavy melee attacks deal +34% critical damage.
- Trenchant Strikes: heavy melee attacks deal +23% damage.
These are published item values from the official April 23, 2024 article, not independently tested performance. The article says, “Spear has a lot of synergy with Heavy attacks.” Amazon’s March 7, 2024 update, updated March 22, says Poison Tipped was restricted to heavy melee attacks; do not interpret the listed poison as applying to ranged attacks. Is this build still current, and can new players buy the game?
Amazon announced on January 15, 2026 that New World: Aeternum was delisted and no longer available for purchase starting that day. Existing purchasers can continue playing until the announced permanent server shutdown on January 31, 2027. Amazon also says there will be no further content or server merges. The October 2024 guides do not establish whether Spear abilities, perks, attributes, gear choices, or the relative strength of these builds changed after their update. Treat the ability choices here as a historical reference, not current best-in-slot advice.
