Oblivion Remastered Keeps Some of the Original’s Bugs and Memes, but Not All of Them

Oblivion Remastered keeps some deliberate voice-line flubs and inherited oddities, but Bethesda's patch notes show many bugs have been fixed. Here is how to tell which is which.

Partly. Oblivion Remastered keeps much of the 2006 game’s character, including some oddities Bethesda has openly accepted. But “all the bugs” overstates it. Bethesda’s patch notes show a long list of fixes to quests, crashes, gameplay, interface, performance, and visuals, and those fixes do not apply evenly across platforms. Whether a glitch you see is inherited from the original, introduced by the remaster, or already fixed depends on the glitch and the version you are playing.

A player discussion put the question well: are these bugs only in the remaster, or are they from the original and now being fixed? That is the right distinction to draw, and the sections below explain how to draw it.

What the remaster kept on purpose

Oblivion Remastered was developed with Virtuos. Bethesda describes it as a remaster rather than a remake: the game runs on the original game logic beneath a new presentation, with a visual overhaul and modern refinements, and the aim in Bethesda’s April 22, 2025 launch statement was to keep the core of the game and its feel as a product of an earlier era. That approach is why many familiar quirks survive. A project that rebuilt every system from scratch would have removed a lot of them.

Voice-over is the clearest case of deliberate retention. In remarks GamesRadar reported from a roundtable, Todd Howard, Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer, said leaving a voice-over flub in was a judgment call:

  • Challenging new foes, hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibeous Grummites and more

“Stuff like that? Yeah, just leave it. It’s fine. It’s part of the game’s character.”

GameSpot’s review also notes that original voice flubs remain, even though some voices and lines were re-recorded. Howard’s comment covers voice flubs specifically. It does not cover every glitch. Bethesda has not described crashes, stuck quests, or clipping animations as features, and treating them that way would misread the record.

What Bethesda has fixed

The patch notes are the best evidence for whether a problem you remember from 2025 still exists. The three updates below are the ones covered by the official notes we could confirm.

Update 1.1 (June 11, 2025)

Update 1.1 focused on quests, major bugs and blockers, and quality-of-life issues. Its notes also mention planned performance work.

Update 1.2 (July 16, 2025)

Update 1.2 focused on quests, gameplay, and performance. Its notes include a fix for floating necklaces, one of the visual oddities fans tend to point to when they talk about the game’s rough edges.

Switch 2 update (September 17, 2026)

The most recent official notes we could confirm are Bethesda’s September 17, 2026 Switch 2 patch notes. They list fixes for crashes, gameplay problems, and a visual issue. This shows fixes are still shipping on Switch 2 more than a year after Update 1.2. It does not establish what other platforms have received.

The game is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. The table below shows what each set of notes covers and what it leaves open.

Update 1.1 June 11, 2025 Not stated in the notes Quests, major bugs and blockers, quality-of-life issues, planned performance work
Update 1.2 July 16, 2025 Not stated in the notes Quests, gameplay, performance, floating necklaces
Switch 2 patch notes September 17, 2026 Switch 2 Crashes, gameplay problems, a visual issue

The notes we could confirm do not establish whether PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S received updates after July 2025. Before you assume a bug is still present or has been fixed on those platforms, check that platform’s own update history.

Memes and awkward moments

Oblivion’s odd dialogue and stiff animations have a second life in fan culture. GameSpot describes this awkwardness as part of the remaster’s recognizable personality, and Meristation discusses the original’s humorous situations and how they land again in the remaster.

Those are two separate things. A comic moment that circulates as a clip is not evidence of a defect, and a defect that looks funny in a clip is still a defect if it breaks progress. This article sorts problems into categories rather than cataloguing memes, because the sources we could confirm do not document a complete list of either. We also found no published count or rate of bugs for the remaster, so nothing here measures how common any glitch is.

How to sort a glitch you have seen

  1. Check whether it is a voice-over flub. If it is, Bethesda has said some were kept on purpose. Some voices and lines were re-recorded, so an old flub you remember may no longer be in the game.
  2. Check whether the original had it. Because the remaster runs on the original game logic, behavior that predates the remaster is inherited. Pre-2025 videos or forum reports of the same behavior are the practical test. If you find none, the problem is more likely remaster-specific.
  3. Check the patch notes for your platform. Match the problem against Update 1.1 (June 11, 2025), Update 1.2 (July 16, 2025), and the Switch 2 notes (September 17, 2026). Install the newest build your platform offers, then retest. A problem named in the notes has been addressed within the scope those notes describe.
  4. Check whether it blocks progress. Crashes, stuck quests, and lost progress are blockers and deserve the most urgent report. Floating items and awkward animations are usually cosmetic or comic.
  5. Report it with its details. Record the platform, the build you are running, the date, and whether you can reproduce it. Send the report through the platform’s or Bethesda’s official support channels. Those details are what turn a vague complaint into something that can be checked against the notes.
