The most useful Prime Day upgrade for a retro gaming setup may be a small fix to the connection between a console and a TV—not a new console or an elaborate modification. Before buying anything, check what video signal your console outputs and which inputs your display accepts. Then choose a route that fits your gear, preference for CRT-style presentation, and comfort with installation work.
Start with the connection you actually need
There is no single best way to connect every retro console to every modern TV. The right choice depends on the console’s video output, the display’s inputs, how much setup effort you will accept, and whether you prefer a CRT presentation or a modern display. A recent connection guide distinguishes four practical routes: use a CRT, add a basic converter, use an external scaler, or modify the console internally for HDMI. Retromart’s 2026 connection guide outlines those options.
- Check the console: identify its actual video output and cable compatibility.
- Check the TV: note which inputs are available and whether they accept the console’s signal.
- Choose your presentation: decide whether you want a CRT or a modern display.
- Set your effort limit: distinguish a simple external connection from work that requires opening and modifying a console.
Compare the four upgrade routes
| Route | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Keep or use a CRT | You value CRT presentation or already have a suitable display. | Available space, the display’s condition, and compatibility with the console’s cable and output. Retromart’s guide identifies these as setup considerations. |
| Basic converter | You want a simpler connection to a modern TV. | That the converter supports the console’s actual signal and works with the TV’s input. Compatibility depends on the specific setup, as Retromart’s guide notes. |
| External scaler | You need analog-to-digital conversion or scaling and want an external device. | Supported inputs, output resolution, and compatibility with the display. RetroTINK describes a family of retro-gaming scalers, including an analog-input 1440p-class model, on its manufacturer site. |
| Internal HDMI modification | You want a console-specific internal digital-output route and are willing to undertake installation. | The exact console revision and the kit’s installation requirements. Pixel FX says its Dreamcast Retro GEM kit must be soldered into the console and requires a high level of soldering skill; see the manufacturer’s product page. |
When a scaler is worth considering
A scaler is a targeted solution, not a default purchase for every retro setup. Consider one when you have a specific conversion or scaling need, then match the device’s supported inputs and output to the console and display. RetroTINK describes its products as a scaler family built for game content and lists analog-input products, including an 1440p-class model, on its site. Confirm the exact model’s specifications before buying; the product family alone does not establish compatibility with every console or TV.
Why an internal HDMI mod is a different kind of upgrade
An internal modification is not simply another plug-in cable. For its Dreamcast Retro GEM kit, Pixel FX states: “The Retro GEM must be soldered into your gaming console.” The manufacturer also specifies a high level of soldering skill. Check the exact console revision and installation requirements before choosing this route, and do not treat it as an easy accessory if you are not prepared for console-level installation work. Pixel FX’s product page provides those requirements for this Dreamcast kit.

Even a simple setup can hinge on the right input
If your console already has HDMI, the improvement may be as modest as checking the connection and selecting the correct TV input. Nintendo’s Super NES Classic setup instructions call for connecting the HDMI cable and choosing the corresponding input on the television. Follow the instructions for your specific console and TV rather than assuming the display will switch automatically. Nintendo’s setup guide covers the Super NES Classic Edition.

“Retro gaming HDMI upscaler” is a useful search phrase if you have identified a need for an external scaler. Treat a listing as a candidate, not a recommendation: verify that it accepts your console’s signal and produces an output your TV supports. The same rule applies to a basic converter—match the console’s output to the display’s available input before you buy. This avoids choosing a product by its category name alone.
