There are three Rhinogrund encounters across Hollow Knight: Silksong, but the Pilgrim’s Rest encounter has a missable state: if it escapes, it can be recovered only before Act 3 begins. Two kills are required for its Hunter’s Journal entry. The first two encounters—the one near Pilgrim’s Rest and the one in the Memorium—are the ones listed as Beast Shard sources.
Where to find Rhinogrunds
Pilgrim’s Rest in Far Fields
At the lower-right side of the Far Fields Bellway station, look for a hidden path leading through a platforming challenge to a Rhinogrund trapped behind a gate. This is the encounter to resolve carefully: opening the gate before killing the creature lets it escape.
Memorium in the Citadel
A second Rhinogrund appears in the Memorium during Act 2. This is another opportunity to earn a Journal kill and obtain a Beast Shard.
Southwestern Far Fields in Act 3
A third encounter appears in a corridor in the southwestern Far Fields during Act 3. If you missed or released the Pilgrim’s Rest Rhinogrund, this is the encounter to seek out for another Journal kill.

What happens if the Pilgrim’s Rest Rhinogrund escapes?
According to the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki encounter listing, an escaped Rhinogrund can reappear in Mort’s shop after you break the shop door mechanism and enter the Citadel. It remains there until you defeat it or Act 3 begins. If Act 3 starts while it is still unresolved, it disappears. If you leave it imprisoned in its room instead, it is found dead there. These encounter-state details come from a community wiki, not developer documentation, so players pursuing completion should treat the Pilgrim’s Rest fight as a missable opportunity and settle it before advancing to Act 3.
Rewards and Hunter’s Journal requirements
The Rhinogrund’s Journal entry requires two kills. The Rhinogrund and Beast Shard pages list the Pilgrim’s Rest and Memorium encounters as Beast Shard sources; they do not establish a Beast Shard drop for the Act 3 encounter. How to beat a Rhinogrund
The Hunter’s Journal describes the Rhinogrund as a long-horned beast that impales foes and wrenches the ground to fling debris. The standard creature has 150 health; the black-threaded Act 3 variant has 300, according to the Hollow Knight Wiki overview. Its armored front blocks most Needle attacks and many tools, so choose an approach that bypasses or pierces that defense.
Use a piercing tool or Silk Skill
The wiki identifies Longpin, Rosary Cannon and Needle Phial as tools that can pierce the shell, and says all Silk Skills pierce its front defense. Hornet’s Journal note also advises: “Certain tools and skills can pierce its defences. I should adjust my strategy as needed.” Tool names and availability can depend on your progression, so use what you have unlocked rather than waiting for a specific option.

Attack from behind if you lack a piercing option
The wiki’s recommended alternative is to Needle-bounce onto the Rhinogrund’s back as it charges past or lands from Whirling Leap. This avoids wasting attacks on the armored front.
Exploit the Ground Wrench commitment
When the Rhinogrund begins Ground Wrench, dash over it. The attack cannot change direction once underway, creating a brief opening to get behind it or reposition safely. This tactic and the bounce timing are wiki-based guidance, not claims of first-hand testing.
