The ROG Phone 9 Pro is no longer a rumor. ASUS announced the series on November 19, 2024, followed by the US launch announcement on January 7, 2025. The phone officially includes a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, ASUS’s GameCool 9 thermal system, and a display mode that reaches 185Hz during supported games.
The important qualification is that 185Hz is not the phone’s universal refresh rate, and improved cooling does not mean the handset will remain cool under every workload.
ROG Phone 9 Pro: rumor versus reality
| Claim | What ASUS actually confirmed |
|---|---|
| 185Hz display is rumored | Confirmed, but 185Hz is a gaming mode accessed through Game Genie. |
| Snapdragon 8 Elite is rumored | Confirmed processor, with an advertised maximum CPU frequency of 4.3GHz and an Adreno 830 GPU. |
| Cooling may be improved | Confirmed GameCool 9 redesign, with ASUS claiming a 12% cooling-performance improvement from its larger graphite sheet. |
| The external cooler guarantees higher FPS | Not established. ASUS’s published examples mainly show lower temperatures at similar frame rates. |
| The Pro Edition is a different phone | It uses the same core platform, but adds memory, storage, and the AeroActive Cooler X Pro bundle. |
If the original headline appeared before the phone’s launch, it was a valid pre-release framing at the time. In September 2026, however, these features should be described as confirmed specifications rather than current speculation.
ASUS’s announcement confirms the ROG Phone 9 series, while the official specification page details the display modes, processor, and hardware configuration.

What the 185Hz display actually means
The ROG Phone 9 Pro has a 6.78-inch Samsung flexible AMOLED panel with a 2400×1080 resolution. ASUS lists HDR10 support, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a 1,600-nit high-brightness mode, and a peak brightness rating of 2,500 nits.
Its refresh-rate limits depend on what the phone is doing:
| Use case | Maximum stated refresh rate |
|---|---|
| Adaptive system operation | 120Hz |
| Manually selected system setting | 165Hz |
| Supported gaming mode through Game Genie | 185Hz |
That distinction matters. “185Hz display” is technically accurate, but it does not mean the Android interface, video apps, or every game runs at 185Hz. The 185Hz option is primarily intended for gaming and is exposed through Game Genie rather than as a universal system-wide setting.
A game must also support a sufficiently high frame rate, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite must be able to render those frames at the selected resolution and graphics settings. A 185Hz panel can refresh 185 times per second, but it cannot create frames that the game and GPU do not produce.
The benefit is most apparent in fast competitive games where high frame rates can make motion and input feel more immediate. It is far less meaningful for turn-based games, video playback, cloud gaming, or ordinary use. Running at a higher refresh rate can also increase power consumption, so users may prefer 120Hz or adaptive operation when battery life matters more than latency.
Refresh rate should not be confused with touch-sampling rate. Refresh rate describes how often the display updates its image; touch sampling describes how frequently the phone checks for touch input. Both can affect gaming responsiveness, but they are separate specifications.
Why Snapdragon 8 Elite cooling matters
The ROG Phone 9 Pro uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, with an advertised maximum CPU frequency of 4.3GHz and an Adreno 830 GPU. It is a flagship performance platform designed to deliver the processing and graphics headroom needed by demanding Android games.

That performance creates a thermal challenge. A short benchmark burst is less important to a gaming phone than maintaining stable performance through a long session. As the processor heats up, the phone may reduce operating speeds to control temperatures, which can affect sustained frame rates, surface comfort, and battery drain.
The 185Hz mode therefore works best as part of a broader performance system. The Snapdragon 8 Elite may provide the necessary rendering capability, but it does not guarantee 185 frames per second. Actual results depend on the game engine, frame-rate cap, graphics settings, resolution, software optimization, ambient temperature, battery level, and the phone’s thermal state.
What changed with GameCool 9?
ASUS calls the internal design GameCool 9, describing it as a third-generation, 360-degree SoC cooling system. The design centers thermal management around the processor and combines a vapor chamber with graphite, boron-nitride thermal materials, and the phone’s dual-battery layout.
ASUS says the graphite sheet is 57% larger by volume than the preceding design and claims that the enlarged sheet improves cooling performance by 12%. Those figures are manufacturer claims, not universal independent measurements. They indicate the intended hardware improvement, but they should not be treated as a guarantee that every game will run 12% cooler or 12% faster.
The practical objective is to move heat away from the Snapdragon 8 Elite and distribute it through more of the phone’s internal structure. That can provide additional thermal headroom during sustained workloads, although the heat still has to leave the device. A phone with better heat spreading can remain more comfortable in one scenario while still reaching a high peak temperature in another.

What the AeroActive Cooler X Pro adds
The AeroActive Cooler X Pro is a clip-on fan accessory designed to provide active cooling rather than relying only on the phone’s internal thermal system. ASUS says its fan blades are 12.5% larger than those in the previous design and claims up to 29% more effective cooling.

- Black, comes with Cooling Fan and Screen Protection, Charger, Charging Cable and Instruction Manual
The accessory also adds two physical gaming buttons. That makes it more than a temperature-control device: it can provide additional controls for games that support button mapping, while the phone itself supplies features such as AirTriggers and a side USB-C port. The ROG Phone 9 Pro also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, a useful feature for players who want wired audio without an adapter.
Active cooling is most relevant to players who:
- Play demanding 3D games for long sessions.
- Use high-performance or X Mode profiles.
- Play in a hot environment.
- Want to reduce the phone’s surface temperature.
- Want more thermal headroom during sustained workloads.
It is less compelling for short gaming sessions, casual games, and cloud gaming, where the phone is not rendering the entire game locally. It also adds fan noise, bulk, and another accessory to carry and charge or connect. Buyers who prefer a slim, quiet, uncomplicated phone may reasonably skip it.

“Better cooling” can describe several different outcomes:
- Lower surface temperature: the phone feels cooler in the hand.
- Higher sustained performance: the processor can maintain higher operating speeds for longer.
- Lower peak temperature: the internal maximum temperature is reduced.
An accessory may improve one outcome without delivering all three. In particular, lower temperatures do not automatically produce higher frame rates if the game is already capped at 60fps or 120fps.
ASUS published examples from games including Zenless Zone Zero and Wuthering Waves. In its testing, the ROG Phone 9 reportedly averaged 43.4°C at 60fps in Zenless Zone Zero without the AeroActive Cooler X Pro and 31.3°C with it. For Wuthering Waves, ASUS lists 42.2°C and 59.1fps without the cooler versus 31.2°C and 59.1fps with it.
These are ASUS test results for particular games and conditions. They show that the cooler can substantially reduce reported temperature while frame rate remains nearly unchanged; they do not prove a universal performance increase.

Android Central reported that the phone reached approximately 52°C in a 3DMark Steel Nomad Light stress test with X Mode enabled. That result does not invalidate ASUS’s cooling design, but it demonstrates that the phone can still become very hot under a demanding synthetic workload.

ASUS’s cooling article also contains a table that refers to Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 while discussing the ROG Phone 9. That conflicts with the phone’s official product and launch specifications, which identify Snapdragon 8 Elite. The official specifications should take priority, and the inconsistent table should not be used as evidence that the ROG Phone 9 has the older chip.
ROG Phone 9 Pro versus Pro Edition
For the US market, ASUS listed two principal configurations:
| Model | Memory and storage | Cooler included | US launch MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Phone 9 Pro | 16GB RAM, 512GB storage | No | $1,199.99 |
| ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition | 24GB RAM, 1TB storage | AeroActive Cooler X Pro | $1,499.99 |
Both models use the Snapdragon 8 Elite and the same basic display concept. The Pro Edition is best understood as a higher-memory, higher-storage package with the cooler bundled—not as a fundamentally different or automatically faster phone.
ASUS listed the AeroActive Cooler X Pro separately at a US MSRP of $119.99. At launch-list pricing, buying the standard Pro and the cooler separately cost materially less than the Pro Edition. That makes the standard model plus accessory the more flexible option for buyers who want active cooling but do not need 24GB of RAM or 1TB of storage.
These are launch MSRPs, not guaranteed September 2026 street prices. Current stock, discounts, and regional availability should be checked on the standard Pro store page, the Pro Edition store page, and the cooler store page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy the ROG Phone 9 Pro?
It makes sense for dedicated mobile gamers
The phone’s strongest case is its gaming ecosystem: AirTriggers, gaming-focused software, a side USB-C port, a headphone jack, high-refresh gaming support, and compatibility with an active cooler. Players who spend hours in demanding 3D games can benefit more from these features than from a conventional camera-focused flagship.
The cooler is worthwhile for long sessions
Buy the AeroActive Cooler X Pro separately if you want lower surface temperatures, physical controls, and additional thermal headroom but do not need the Pro Edition’s 24GB/1TB configuration. It is most useful when sustained gaming is a regular activity rather than an occasional one.

Casual players should think twice
For light gaming, the 185Hz mode and active cooler are difficult to justify. The phone is relatively large and weighs approximately 227g, and its gaming hardware comes with design and accessory trade-offs that provide little value if demanding games are not part of your routine.
Buyers seeking the newest 2026 hardware need a separate comparison
The ROG Phone 9 Pro is a 2024-generation device. A buyer specifically seeking the newest Snapdragon generation available in August or September 2026 should compare current models rather than assuming the Snapdragon 8 Elite remains the latest option. Regional versions, carrier bands, software support, and current pricing also need to be verified before purchase.
It is also not the obvious choice for someone prioritizing camera performance, compact size, minimal weight, or a conventional flagship design. Gaming phones such as RedMagic devices may offer different approaches to integrated or accessory-based cooling, but the relevant comparison is not just peak chipset performance. Consider sustained performance, controls, display modes, camera quality, software support, carrier compatibility, and the total cost after adding accessories.
Final verdict
The ROG Phone 9 Pro’s headline features are real, but the original rumor framing is outdated. ASUS officially confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Elite, GameCool 9, and an 185Hz Game Genie display mode before the phone reached the US market.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 185Hz setting is a specialized gaming option rather than a system-wide refresh rate. GameCool 9 is a meaningful hardware redesign, but ASUS’s 12% internal-cooling and 29% accessory figures remain manufacturer claims. The AeroActive Cooler X Pro can materially reduce temperatures in ASUS’s examples, yet lower heat does not guarantee higher FPS, and independent stress testing shows that the phone can still become very hot.
For serious mobile gamers, the standard Pro paired with the optional cooler is likely the more flexible value proposition. The Pro Edition is mainly for buyers who genuinely need 1TB of storage and 24GB of RAM and want the cooler included. For everyone else, the phone’s size, cost, accessory dependence, and gaming-first design deserve as much consideration as its 185Hz mode.
