To cross the Bridge of the Reverent as part of “For Whom the Bridge Tolls,” accept Senior Warden Weintraut’s deal and address the people he calls traitors. The clearest documented route is to recover evidence of Ida Rutledge’s death and persuade Charlton Weintraut to come to the checkpoint. You can also try to sneak past or fight the guards, but those alternatives are not documented as granting the same quest completion or rewards.
Start “For Whom the Bridge Tolls”
Find Senior Warden Weintraut at the Bridge of the Reverent on Paradise Island. Agree to find two people for him to bring to the bridge. The quest has more than one possible target, but the most fully documented walkthrough route uses Ida Rutledge and Charlton Weintraut. The Outer Worlds Wiki also lists Inez Silang as a possible target and warns of serious consequences if you hand her over: The Outer Worlds Wiki quest page.
Find evidence of Ida Rutledge’s death
Travel to Sovereign’s Sweet Spire Grove and pursue Ida’s objective. Walkthroughs describe Ida as already dead and identify her severed arm at the harvester as evidence to recover. PCGamesN reports that a broken elevator on this route can be repaired with Engineering 3; treat that as one access method rather than a confirmed requirement for every route or quest state. Persuade Charlton Weintraut
Charlton is first encountered in Westport and later moves to Fairfield after related events. PCGamesN says to complete “The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice” to make him relocate to Fairfield. Its reported conversation route includes a quest-specific persuasion sequence, a Speech 2 check, and a final Speech 3 check. Dialogue and checks can depend on quest state, so this is a guide-reported route, not a guarantee that every character build or playthrough will present identical options.

Return to the Bridge of the Reverent
After addressing Ida’s objective and Charlton, return to the bridge and speak with the Warden or guard to secure passage. The stated objective is access across the bridge. Reward figures differ by guide: the wiki lists 50 bits if Charlton was captured, while GamesRecon reports 2,160 XP. Those are guide-reported values, not a confirmed universal reward for every outcome.
Can you cross without completing the deal?
Yes. Game8 describes sneaking past the checkpoint and killing the guards as alternatives to completing the quest: Game8’s “How to Cross the Bridge” guide. These routes may avoid the Warden’s bargain, but the available guides do not establish that bypassing the checkpoint completes the quest or gives the same rewards. Game8 also says the quest can still be completed if guards were not alerted.

If the quest does not progress
One Obsidian forum user reported a progression problem after discussing the deal with a guard before formally accepting the quest. That is an individual report, not evidence of a widespread current bug. If the quest is missing from your journal or dialogue stalls, check that you formally accepted it from Senior Warden Weintraut, then consult current patch information or Obsidian support resources: Obsidian forum discussion.
