Topeka’s “ToPikachu” name was a one-day Pokémon promotion—not a newly announced 2026 event. The sources reviewed document two occasions: an August 27, 1998 proclamation tied to Pokémon’s U.S. debut, and a return on October 27, 2018, connected to Nintendo’s Pokémon: Let’s Go road trip.
What “ToPikachu” meant
“ToPikachu” combines Topeka with Pikachu. In both reported instances, it was a temporary promotional name used to celebrate Pokémon, rather than evidence that Topeka permanently changed its municipal identity. The available reporting does not establish whether the two proclamations used the same legal mechanism.
The two ToPikachu occasions
| Date | Pokémon connection | Reported city leadership and activity |
|---|---|---|
| August 27, 1998 | Pokémon’s U.S. debut | A 2026 retrospective says then-mayor Joan Wagnon issued a one-day proclamation. The original proclamation was not located in the available reporting. Source: 2026 retrospective |
| October 27, 2018 | Nintendo’s Pokémon: Let’s Go road-trip promotion | Mayor Michelle De La Isla announced the one-day return at a city council meeting. Nintendo planned two trucks near the Topeka Zoo in Gage Park, where visitors could preview the game. Contemporaneous coverage; Event coverage |
What happened in 2018
The 2018 name change was tied to Nintendo’s road-trip promotion for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! The planned game-preview trucks near the Topeka Zoo gave the temporary city-name gesture a public event component. Contemporary coverage dated the return to Saturday, October 27, 2018. Is Topeka being renamed ToPikachu again?
The sources reviewed document the 1998 and 2018 events; they do not substantiate a new 2026 renaming. The word “again” in the headline refers to the historical repeat in 2018, not a presently confirmed event. A later announcement would need current confirmation from the city or reliable local reporting.
