Project Zomboid Build 42 expands Knox Country and adds more depth to long-term survival, including crafting, building, animals, farming, fishing, lighting, firearms, interface tools, lore, and multiplayer updates. As of October 8, 2026, The Indie Stone lists Build 42.21 as Stable. The broad feature overview is labeled 42.20, so consult the notes for your exact build for patch-specific details.
What’s new in Build 42?
Build 42 is a broad expansion of the game’s world and survival systems rather than a single-mechanic update. Its features give players more places to explore and more options for sustaining a safehouse over a long run. The sections below summarize the official feature overview; individual details can vary by patch.
A larger, reworked Knox Country
The overview adds Ekron, Irvington, and Brandenburg, alongside redesigned existing locations, basements, tall buildings, and randomized wilderness beyond the map’s edges. The Indie Stone’s 2026 feature overview attributes 1,400 unique buildings and 20,000 new tiles to the map work (official Build 42 overview). A separate official map-development post reports 35,000 total tiles, doubled surface area, 400 procedural basements, and 75 unique basements (map-development post). These are developer-reported figures from different descriptions of the map work, not independent measurements.
Basements and tall buildings also make exploration more vertical, while redesigned towns bring distinct buildings and local character.

More crafting and construction for long-term survival
Build 42 broadens crafting inputs, outputs, workstations, and construction options. The official overview includes masonry, carving, knapping, blacksmithing, walls, shelters, food preservation, and drying racks. These systems support larger projects and self-sufficiency once a player has established a base; the overview does not present every recipe as necessary for ordinary progression.
The Indie Stone describes these systems as foundations for a richer late game and for multiplayer games that can continue further into the post-apocalypse. That is a design aim, not a guarantee that every save or server can run indefinitely.
Animals, farming, hunting, and fishing
Build 42 expands wilderness and food-production options with domestic and wild animals, animal husbandry, tracking, hunting, seasonal crops, new farming implements, and revised fishing. The official overview lists animal products including meat, leather, eggs, manure, and milk; crops and herbs include corn, peas, tobacco, and rosemary. Fish can react to noise, and players can craft chum. These systems add alternatives for producing food and materials rather than making each activity mandatory.
Lighting, firearms, and combat
The lighting overhaul changes ambient light and how light travels through spaces; the official overview says nights are darker. Zombies ragdoll when struck by vehicles or hit by gunfire or explosive damage.

Firearms receive new models, animations, muzzle effects, ammunition types, sound effects, loot distribution, and an aiming system responsive to character state and skills. These changes can make nighttime exploration and combat feel different. The published feature material does not establish a performance benchmark or a universal judgment about combat balance.
Modes, interface, lore, and multiplayer
Other updates include refreshed modes and challenges, expanded sandbox options, an official mod manager, refreshed menus, and more controller customization. New clothing and containers, item placement, and environmental storytelling through flyers, newspapers, maps, broadcasts, and vehicle liveries broaden the ways the world communicates its story.
Build 42 also changes multiplayer systems, including server-side handling for more actions and additional anti-cheat measures. The 42.21 Stable release post reports fixes for multiplayer zombie duplication and disappearance, confirming that multiplayer work continued after earlier Unstable releases (42.21 Stable release notes).

Will my save work?
Compatibility depends on the precise source and destination versions. The 42.20 release announcement specifically says existing saves from Unstable 42.19 were not compatible with 42.20 because additional map content had been added. It explains how to select the 42.19 beta to continue that Unstable game (42.20 release announcement). This warning applies to that stated version transition; it does not establish a blanket rule for every Build 41 or Build 42 save, or for every mod.
