Multiplayer access is controlled in three separate places: the settings of the world you host, the Microsoft family or Xbox permissions on a child’s account, and Nintendo’s console parental controls. Which one you need depends on what is blocking you. The guidance below was checked in October 2026, and menu labels can change between game versions.
Which control you need
| Control | What it governs | Where it lives | Who changes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| World multiplayer permission | Whether other players can join one world you host | That world’s settings in Minecraft | The host of that world |
| Child-account multiplayer permission | Whether a child’s Microsoft account can join multiplayer games | Microsoft family and Xbox privacy settings | Parent or guardian |
| Switch communication restriction | Console-level limits on communication for a child profile | HOME Menu > System Settings > Parental Controls, or Nintendo’s smart-device app | Parent or guardian |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership | Online features, including online multiplayer | Nintendo Account and membership, not an in-game setting | Account holder |
Turn on multiplayer for a world you host
Minecraft has no global “multiplayer settings” menu that covers every world. Multiplayer is permitted per world, so you change it in the settings for the world you are hosting.

- Open the settings for the specific world you want others to join.
- Find the multiplayer permission and allow it for that world. The exact wording and position of the option vary by game version, and Minecraft’s published help does not give a button-by-button route to it.
- Remember that the host is the player who enables this. If a friend is hosting, they need to make the change in their own world settings.
Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance lists the host’s world multiplayer permission as a common reason players cannot join a game. See Minecraft Help: Troubleshoot Unable to Join Multiplayer Games in Minecraft.
Allow multiplayer on a child’s account
If a child cannot join multiplayer games, the permission usually sits in the child’s Microsoft family or Xbox privacy settings, not in the game. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements state that child accounts must enable permissions to join multiplayer. See Minecraft Help: Requirements to Play Minecraft Multiplayer Games.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Minecraft also states that it follows whichever setting is more restrictive: the Microsoft account setting or the built-in platform controls on the console. A parent may therefore need to check both. Minecraft’s parental guidance for child accounts explains this and points to Nintendo’s controls. See Minecraft Help: Buying Minecraft for a Child Account on a Console or Mobile Device.
Check Switch parental controls
Nintendo’s console-level communication limits are separate from Minecraft’s own permissions. To review them on the Switch:
Rank #2
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
- From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Review the communication settings for the child’s profile and adjust them as needed.
Nintendo’s support article says the same communication limits can be managed from Nintendo’s smart-device app, which also offers additional management options. See Nintendo Support: How to Set Up, Adjust, or Remove Parental Controls on Nintendo Switch.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
For online features, yes. Nintendo’s official product listing for Minecraft on Switch states that a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account are required for online features. The listing presents local play and online play as separate modes, so playing with others on the same system is not the same as joining over the internet. See Nintendo: Minecraft for Nintendo Switch.

A Microsoft account does not replace the membership for Switch online multiplayer. Treat the two as separate requirements.
Sign in with a Microsoft account for crossplay
A Microsoft account is what allows Switch players to play with people on non-Nintendo devices. Minecraft Help describes this sign-in flow for Nintendo Switch, which uses a code rather than typing your password on the console:
Rank #4
- In Minecraft on Switch, select Sign in with a Microsoft Account.
- Note the code shown on the Switch screen.
- On a phone or computer, open a browser and go to the sign-in page named in Minecraft’s help article, then enter the code.
- Confirm the account on the phone or computer. The Switch then completes sign-in.
Once signed in, the account is available for crossplay with players on other devices. Crossplay still depends on the online membership above.

Best Value
- Game version: Players need matching game versions to join the same multiplayer game. Minecraft’s requirements page covers version matching.
- Connection type: Confirm whether you are joining over the internet or a local connection, and that the connection itself is working.
- Host status: The host must be online and must have multiplayer enabled for that world.
- Subscription: The Switch account needs an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play.
- Child-account permission: Check the Microsoft family or Xbox multiplayer permission, and the Switch parental controls if communication is restricted.
- Service status: Where relevant, check Minecraft’s service status before changing settings.
Minecraft’s troubleshooting article walks through account access, host permission and subscription issues in more detail. See Minecraft Help: Troubleshoot Unable to Join Multiplayer Games in Minecraft.
Nintendo’s and Minecraft’s help pages do not publish current pricing or promotional terms for the membership, so check Nintendo’s own store pages for those details.
