Search its chests; if you want the most reliable target, prioritize a Treasure Room Bastion Remnant, which Mojang’s Java snapshot notes say contains two guaranteed templates.
Where to find the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
The template is loot from Bastion Remnants, not Nether Fortresses or other Nether structures. Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 23w04a notes say it can appear randomly in all Bastion Remnant chests and that every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant has two guaranteed. The notes were published during development of the 1.20 feature set, so they establish that snapshot’s mechanics rather than guaranteeing identical loot rates in every current edition, version, or server.
Which bastion chests should you search?
Treasure Room Bastions are the strongest target when your goal is to secure a template. Other bastion chest types are also worth checking, but their reported rates are less certain for current versions.
| Bastion chest type | Reported template loot | Version context |
|---|---|---|
| Treasure Room | Two guaranteed in each Treasure Room Bastion Remnant, according to Mojang’s Java snapshot notes. | Java Edition Snapshot 23w04a, during development of the 1.20 feature set. |
| Bridge | 10.0% chance per chest, according to the Minecraft Wiki loot-table result. | The result is older search-index data; confirm against your game version. |
| Hoglin stable | 10.0% chance per chest, according to the Minecraft Wiki loot-table result. | The result is older search-index data; confirm against your game version. |
| Generic | 10.0% chance per chest, according to the Minecraft Wiki loot-table result. | The result is older search-index data; confirm against your game version. |
The Minecraft Wiki’s Netherite Upgrade loot-table result also reports that all treasure chests contain one. Treat those percentages as attributed loot-table figures, not as rates newly verified for every edition or version. Its Netherite Upgrade tutorial likewise identifies bastions as the place to obtain the template.

How to duplicate a template after finding one
You can copy a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template rather than searching for another. The recipe uses one template, seven diamonds, and a block of the material the template is made from; for this template, that material is netherrack. The recipe yields two templates, according to Mojang’s snapshot notes.
- One Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
- Seven diamonds
- One netherrack block
Smithing templates are consumed when used, so copying the template first lets you preserve an extra for later upgrades.
