Crossy Road is free to download and earns money through both advertising and in-app purchases. It uses autoplay ads as well as optional rewarded ads, but the developer does not publish a universal schedule for how often ads appear. The exact cadence can vary, so one player’s experience is not a reliable measure for everyone.
Why Crossy Road shows ads
Crossy Road is an “8-bit endless arcade hopper” offered as a free download with in-app purchase options, according to its Google Play listing. Advertising gives the game another source of income alongside purchases made inside the game.
The game’s quick, repeatable runs also create natural pauses between attempts. A 2018 PocketGamer.biz report published in association with Mintegral described rewarded video as a fit for that short-run, high-score loop: players could watch an ad in exchange for in-game currency used to unlock characters. That explains a historical design rationale, not necessarily every ad placement used today.
What kinds of ads appear?
Autoplay ads
These are ads that play as interruptions rather than being chosen in exchange for a reward. Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road Support page says that purchasing any regular character removes autoplay ads.
#1 Best Overall
- 2500mAh/5000mAh large battery, can and play in the same time, continuous cooling without plug in.
- 2500mAh/5000mAh large battery, can and play in the same time, continuous cooling without plug in.
- Fast heat dissipation, mobile phone does not burn, do not wear and tear mobile phone internals, play happily.
- Install and disassemble at any time, suitable for 4.7-6.5inch phones.
- Ergonomic handlle, comfortable grip, good feel, easy to play.
Rewarded ads
These are optional ads tied to an in-game benefit. The developer says its Ad Blocker Pack removes reward ads while allowing players to collect the rewards they would otherwise have to watch ads to receive. A regular-character purchase does not remove this option.
Why ad frequency can differ between players
Hipster Whale says it works with multiple ad providers and that an ad network may stop showing ads after a player reaches its daily maximum. That makes ad availability variable; it does not establish a set number of runs between ads. A Google Play reviewer’s report of seeing an ad every couple of deaths is one person’s experience, not representative frequency data.

How to reduce or remove ads
| Option | What the developer says it does | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a regular character | Removes autoplay ads permanently. | Rewarded ads remain available. |
| Buy the Ad Blocker Pack | Removes autoplay and reward ads; rewards gated by ads can be collected without watching them. | Price and availability may vary by platform or region; check the in-game store. |
| Change ad-personalization settings | Opts out of interest-based ads, according to the developer’s privacy policy. | Does not remove all ads. |
The ad-removal descriptions come from Hipster Whale Support; the personalization limitation is explained in the Crossy Road Privacy Policy. Store prices are not established as a universal amount, so check the offer on your own device before buying. The developer also warns that ad blockers can prevent the game from working properly.

What the historical revenue figures do—and don’t—show
The 2018 PocketGamer.biz/Mintegral report attributed more than $3 million in rewarded-video revenue during Crossy Road’s first 90 days to an announcement by Hipster Whale. It also reported that in-app purchases made up around 70 percent of overall revenue at that time. These are historical figures, not current revenue or a current breakdown of the game’s income.

Crossy Road’s privacy policy says third-party ad networks may display ads and may use cookies or other tracking technologies after a player clicks an ad. Those networks have their own privacy policies. The developer points to mobile operating-system settings for opting out of interest-based advertising, but that choice affects personalization rather than eliminating advertising.
