Howl suits mobile because its combat lets you study the board, plan a sequence of moves and choose when to commit—rather than requiring constant real-time input. That makes brief, interrupted play easier to imagine, though it is a design advantage, not a measured claim about how players use the game. The mobile version also depended on adapting controls and interface elements for smaller screens.
How does Howl’s combat work?
Howl is a turn-based tactical game set in a medieval folktale world where a plague carried by sound transforms people into beasts. You guide a deaf heroine who can foresee danger and plan up to six steps ahead, according to Mi’pu’mi Games’ official game page.

The core rhythm is forecast, plan, then resolve. Apple’s editorial description explains that players choose moves, attacks and skills before starting a round; the game then plays through those planned actions and alternates with the monsters. Rather than reacting continuously, you decide what to do, watch the consequences and adjust your approach for the next exchange.
That sequence makes the tactical question concrete: which threats can you handle with the actions available, and in what order? Planning several steps creates room to anticipate enemy behavior, but it also means a plan can have consequences you must account for when the round plays out.

Why are turn-based games good on mobile?
Planning gives you control over when to commit
Because Howl separates planning from resolution, the player can take time to read the board before committing. That structure can be convenient on a phone: a player may consider the situation, make a plan and then let the sequence resolve without needing uninterrupted, rapid inputs throughout an encounter. The claim is about how the mechanics may fit short or interrupted sessions, not evidence that players actually prefer it or that the game has been measured against real-time alternatives.
The central interaction suits touch input
At the level of interaction design, selecting and arranging tactical actions is a natural match for a touchscreen. But turn-based mechanics alone do not guarantee a good phone experience. In an April 8, 2024 interview with Droid Gamers, the Mi’pu’mi team said its biggest challenge in bringing the game from PC and Switch to mobile was “getting the controls right for mobile.” The team also highlighted making the interface work on smaller screens.

Mi’pu’mi said it regarded the platform versions as identical and aimed to deliver a similar experience on iOS and Android. That is the studio’s stated goal, not independent verification that controls, performance or usability are identical across devices.
What makes Howl different from other mobile strategy games?
Its plan becomes part of the presentation
Howl connects tactical planning to its story and visual identity through Living Ink. The official site describes its flowing ink art style and frames the player’s plans as the making of a prophecy. In an April 9, 2024 interview with Pocket Gamer, Mi’pu’mi described Living Ink as a central feature: the player writes a prophecy while painting through the playthrough. The studio said illuminated manuscripts and watercolor picture books inspired the presentation.

This gives the act of planning a thematic role, rather than treating it only as a menu of combat choices. The heroine’s foresight, the story’s plague and the ink-like imagery all reinforce the idea that a planned sequence is also a glimpse of what may unfold.
The game has continued beyond its original release
Howl is available across PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Android and iOS, according to Mi’pu’mi’s platform listing. On March 13, 2025, the Howl team announced the free Heart of Rot chapter for owners, featuring 16 additional tactical puzzles in an official Steam community announcement. The announcement describes that addition; it does not establish the game’s current total level count across every platform.

Is Howl available on iOS and Android?
Yes. Mi’pu’mi lists both Android and iOS alongside PC and console platforms on its official Howl page. Store availability and pricing can vary by country and change over time. Pocket Gamer reported a $3.99 full-game in-app purchase on April 9, 2024; that is a historical price, not a current store quote.

Its turn-based structure makes the game a plausible fit for phone play: you can evaluate threats and decide on actions before the round resolves, rather than relying on continuous real-time input. That is the design case for mobile, not a universal verdict about every player or device. The studio’s comments about adapting controls and the interface also matter: a deliberate combat loop helps, but it does not by itself prove that the experience is equally comfortable on every screen.
