Most often, a second PS5 controller needs to be paired with the console before it will work. Use the controller that already operates the PS5 to pair it, then try USB pairing, a controller reset, and software updates if the connection still fails. If it connects but a particular game will not accept it, check that game’s local multiplayer support.
Pair the second controller with the PS5
A controller must be paired to the console to use it. PlayStation’s wireless pairing instructions for an additional DualSense require a working controller to navigate the PS5 menus. The menu labels below are PlayStation’s documented labels and may change with system software.

On the PS5, using controller 1, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.

On controller 2, unplug any USB cable. If its player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until the light goes off.

Hold the Create and PS buttons on controller 2 at the same time until its light bar blinks.

Use controller 1 to select controller 2 from the Bluetooth accessory list. A lit player indicator on controller 2 signals that pairing succeeded.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
PlayStation says the PS5 can use up to four controllers at the same time. That console limit does not mean every game supports two or more local players. PlayStation’s DualSense connection guide explains the pairing steps and controller limit.
If it does not pair wirelessly, try USB
Turn on the PS5, connect controller 2 to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button. For this connection method, the cable must support data synchronization as well as charging; a charge-only cable will not work for pairing. If you do not have a suitable cable, try another cable that supports data and synchronization.

After connection, check whether the controller responds and its player indicator lights. If not, continue to the reset steps rather than assuming the controller is defective. PlayStation’s connection instructions describe first-time USB pairing and cable requirements.
Reset controller 2 and pair it again
A controller reset is different from resetting the PS5. It clears the controller’s state so you can try connecting it again.

Turn off the PS5 and unplug controller 2.

Find the small recessed reset button on the back of the controller. Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold it for at least five seconds.

Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable, then press the PS button.

If the PS5 still recognizes the working controller, check for a PS5 system software update. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guide also gives this menu path for DualSense device software: Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. Follow the on-screen update prompts if an update is available.
Menu labels or available update steps can vary with system software. PlayStation’s controller troubleshooting instructions cover software updates alongside reset and connection checks.
If it connects but a game will not use it
Successful pairing only establishes that the PS5 recognizes the controller; it does not establish that a particular game supports local multiplayer. Check the game’s player count and local multiplayer options, then make sure the second player has joined through that game’s own menu or prompt. The console’s support for up to four controllers is not a guarantee of two-player support in every title.

If controller 2 still will not pair after USB connection, reset, and available software updates, use PlayStation’s Controllers Support page to reach the official repair and troubleshooting options. Without knowing whether the controller appears in Bluetooth Accessories, blinks during pairing, works over USB, or connects to another supported device, there is not enough information to identify a specific hardware fault.
