If Path of Exile crashes on PS5, first record what happens and the exact error code. PlayStation describes CE-108255-1 as “An error occurred with the game/application”; the code alone does not establish that the console has a hardware fault. Work through the checks below in order, treating them as troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed fixes.
What the crash may—and may not—mean
Crashes can look different: the game may close to the home screen, freeze, fail while loading, or coincide with the console powering down. Those symptoms are useful clues, but they do not by themselves identify a cause. PlayStation’s description of CE-108255-1 is “An error occurred with the game/application,” not a hardware diagnosis.

The Path of Exile-specific report available here is a forum post dated April 21, 2025. Its author said Path of Exile 2 Early Access, Dawn of the Hunt, version 0.2.0, crashed at the loading screen when entering a character and showed CE-108255-1. The author said reinstalling and rebuilding the PS5 database had not resolved it; other users in the thread reported the same issue. That is anecdotal evidence from one thread, not proof of how widespread the problem is, its cause, or whether it affects current versions. It also does not show that Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2 share the same bug. No official developer resolution appears in that thread. Read the Path of Exile forum report.
Try these 10 troubleshooting steps

Record the symptom and error code
Note whether the game closes, freezes, fails during loading, or the console itself shuts down. Write down the exact code, when the failure occurs, and what you did immediately beforehand. If a loading or character-entry action reliably triggers it, record those steps.

Compare with another game
Try another game and note whether it also crashes. This comparison can help you describe the scope of the problem, but it is not a confirmed cause test. If several games fail or the console powers off, include that information when contacting support rather than diagnosing hardware from CE-108255-1 alone.

Restart the PS5
Restart the console, then launch the game again. PlayStation includes restarting in its troubleshooting flow for games that will not start.

Check for a game update
Highlight Path of Exile on the home screen, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update if it appears. The exact label or availability may vary with the console’s software and the game’s installation state.

Check for a PS5 system software update
Install any available system software update, then try the game again. PlayStation recommends checking system software when a game will not start.

Move it off USB extended storage, if applicable
If the game is installed on USB extended storage, move or reinstall it to the PS5’s internal storage and test again. PlayStation specifically recommends internal storage for a game that will not start.

PlayStation includes restoring licenses among its game-launch troubleshooting steps. Find the current instructions under PlayStation’s game-launch troubleshooting guide and follow the path for your system software.

Reinstall the game
If the crash persists, delete the game and download it again. A wired connection may help a download complete reliably, but it has not been shown to cure this crash. Reinstalling did not resolve the specific 2025 forum poster’s issue, so regard this as a reasonable general step rather than a certain solution.

Use Safe Mode cache and database options cautiously
PlayStation’s game-launch guidance includes clearing the cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. Follow the current PS5 Safe Mode instructions. Back up important data before any system-software reinstallation, and read the on-screen descriptions before selecting an option. Advice about possible local-data effects varies across support guidance; do not assume rebuilding the database will fix a game-specific crash.

Test display settings only as a reversible check
Insomniac’s general PS5 crash guidance suggests trying Performance or Fidelity mode and temporarily disabling VRR or HDR for its own game. This is not Path of Exile-specific advice. If Path of Exile offers a relevant mode, you can test one change at a time and restore your preferred settings if nothing changes. See Insomniac’s guidance.
When and how to contact support
Use PlayStation’s game-launch support guidance if the steps above do not help. PlayStation asks for error codes or messages, a detailed description, and steps that reproduce the problem. Include whether the issue affects other games, the Path of Exile version, and the point where it fails. For a Path of Exile 2 loading or character-entry crash, also check current official Path of Exile support information and patch notes for your version; the April 2025 forum report does not establish the status of a current fix. Contact support promptly if the console shows an overheating warning or cannot be used.
