Roblox usually fails for one of five reasons: the platform is having an incident, a connection or firewall is blocking traffic, the app or browser installation is damaged or outdated, a device setting is interfering, or only one experience is broken. Check Roblox’s status page first. If the service is operating normally, use the scope of the failure and any error message to choose a local fix. Roblox’s support guidance, checked on October 8, 2026, recommends trying each step one at a time, in order, and escalating with specific details if the steps do not work.
Check whether Roblox is down before changing anything
Open Roblox Status before you touch device or network settings. On October 8, 2026, the status page showed every listed component as operational. Its incident history shows a broad site issue on October 5, 2026, identified at 16:04 PDT and resolved at 16:13 PDT, so the outage lasted about nine minutes. A Studio publishing incident on September 28, 2026 was also marked resolved. A status page is a snapshot that changes over time. If it shows an active incident, wait for the update and recheck the page before making disruptive changes. If it shows everything operational, the cause is more likely on your side, but a clean status page does not rule out a problem in one experience or on your network.
Narrow the failure before choosing a fix
Roblox’s support articles separate problems by where they happen. Answer these four questions before you act:
- Scope: Does it fail in every experience, or only one?
- Devices: Does it happen on one device, or on several?
- Network: Does it happen on one Wi-Fi network or connection, or on others too?
- Message: Do you see an error code, such as “Could Not Connect” with ID=17, Error Code 266, or a desktop install or launch failure?

The seven troubleshooting steps, in order
These steps are arranged from least to most disruptive, based on Roblox’s support guidance. Seven steps do not guarantee a fix for every case. Skip any step that does not match your device or error, and stop once the problem is resolved.
1. Check Roblox Status
If the affected component has an active incident, wait for Roblox to resolve it and recheck the page. If everything is operational, continue to the next step.

2. Pin down the scope
Write down whether the failure affects all experiences or one, one device or several, and one network or more than one. This matters because Roblox treats an experience-specific problem differently from a general connection problem. An experience that loads and looks empty may simply have little content, so try a different experience before assuming your connection is at fault.
3. Restart the device and app
Restart the computer or device, and on mobile, force-close the Roblox app and reopen it. Roblox’s Error Code 266 guidance includes rebooting and force-closing, and its desktop guidance begins with a reboot. This is a low-effort first step, but it does not fix a damaged installation or a network block.

4. Test the connection
If another internet source is available, such as a phone hotspot or a different network, try it. On Wi-Fi, a wired connection can help you separate wireless instability from a wider problem. A wired test is a diagnostic, not a repair: it will not fix an outage or a broken experience. If you cannot connect by cable, skip this part and move on.
5. Check browser and network controls
If you play in a browser, try updating it or using another supported browser. Review its security settings and temporarily disable extensions that might interfere, then reload Roblox. Also check whether firewall software or router security settings are blocking Roblox. Roblox’s general connection article lists UDP ports 49152–65535 as the range it currently uses, and notes that the ports in use depend on the operating system. Do not change firewall or router settings unless you understand the effect. On a school, workplace, or other managed network, ask the administrator instead of working around the controls.

6. Reinstall the app when symptoms point to it
Reinstall when you see install loops, desktop crashes, or an error that Roblox ties to a damaged installation. For desktop problems, Roblox advises clearing browser temporary files and reinstalling, with other programs closed during installation or updates. Roblox’s Error Code 266 page includes reinstall instructions for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire OS, and ChromeOS. Follow only the instructions for your device. Do not delete system files or reset all network settings as a general fix.
7. Escalate with the exact error and device details

- Your Roblox username
- The exact error text or code
- Device model and operating system version
- Steps that reproduce the problem
- Recent device or network changes, such as a new router, a software update, or a new firewall rule
If the connection problem also affects other online services on the same network, Roblox’s Error Code 266 guidance suggests contacting your internet provider, because the fault may be outside Roblox.

Error Code 266 is a connection timeout. Roblox’s guidance treats it as a connectivity issue, and its steps differ by platform. On mobile, the steps include force-closing the app, reinstalling, and checking that the device’s date and time are correct. On desktop and other platforms, the steps focus on restarting, reinstalling, and testing another network. Because the instructions are platform-specific, follow the section that matches your device rather than applying one generic recipe.
What this guidance does not establish
The official pages describe what to check and in what order. They do not measure how often each step resolves a problem, and Roblox does not publish a success rate for these fixes. The operating-system requirements and port details on the support pages can change, so confirm them on Roblox’s current support pages before relying on a specific version or setting. The guidance also does not establish that buying hardware, such as a cable, fixes Roblox problems in general.
Roblox’s support articles reviewed for this guide were “General Connection Problems,” “General Desktop Roblox Issues,” and “Error Code 266: Your connection timed out. Check your internet connection and try again.” These are the official pages to consult for the current instructions.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling before checking Roblox Status. If there is an incident, the reinstall will not help.
- Changing firewall or router settings on a network you do not manage.
- Treating a single empty or broken experience as a general Roblox outage.
- Running several changes at once. If you change more than one thing, you will not know which change helped.
