MLB The Show 25 can crash on PS5 for several different reasons, and no single official source names one cause that covers every case. The practical approach is to identify what kind of failure you are seeing, then work through reversible checks first: note the symptom and error code, update, restart, check where the game is stored, restore licenses, and only then reinstall the game or use Safe Mode maintenance options. Console resets and system software reinstalls come last, because they can erase data.
Start by identifying what kind of failure you have
“The game crashes when I launch it,” “MLB The Show 25 freezes during a game,” and “MLB The Show 25 keeps crashing on PS5” can describe different problems, and each points to a different route. Before trying any fix, match your situation to the table below.

| What you see | What it usually means | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| The game will not start, or shows an error code at launch | A game-start or game-data problem, which PlayStation addresses in its launch troubleshooting guidance | Steps 1, 3 to 5, then the error-code section below |
| The game closes to the home screen during play | A game crash, which may depend on the mode or action you were performing | Steps 1 and 2, then Step 10 if it repeats |
| The game stops responding during play | A freeze, which The Show Support says can happen for reasons outside the player’s control | Step 1, then bug report under Step 10 |
| Online play disconnects, but the game stays open | A connection or online-service problem, not necessarily a crash | Test your internet connection (PlayStation directs users to this when updates fail) before reinstalling |
| The whole console powers off | A possible system-level problem, not confirmed as a game crash by the sources reviewed here | Step 1, then contact PlayStation Support |
| Other games also crash | Points away from MLB The Show 25 alone, toward the console or system software | Step 6 first; the game-specific steps may not address the cause |
The triage matters because the sources do not establish a single cause. Matching the symptom keeps you from repeating steps that cannot help with your failure.

1. Record the symptom and error code
Write down whether the game closes to the home screen, freezes, fails at startup, disconnects online, or powers off the whole console. Save the exact error code if one appears, and note the mode or action you were in immediately before the failure, such as a particular game mode or menu. PlayStation asks for error codes and reproduction steps when you contact support, and the same notes will help you choose the right error-code route below. Source: PlayStation Support, “How to troubleshoot issues when starting a game (US)”.
2. Check for a MLB The Show 25 game update
San Diego Studio has released versioned patches that include crash fixes. Two are documented in the 2025 patch notes:
- Game Update 4, dated March 24, 2025, labeled PS5 build 1.04. It lists additional work to prevent a crash from certain outfield hits and “various crash fixes and stability improvements.” See the notes at San Diego Studio, Game Patch #4 / MLB The Show 25: Game Update 4.
- Update 13, dated May 22, 2025, labeled PS5 build 1.13. It lists a fix for a crash when entering a Conquest map from a program. See San Diego Studio, Update 13 / MLB The Show 25: Game Update 13.
These notes show that the developer fixed particular crashes in those builds. They do not show that your crash has the same cause, and they do not identify the current build. The sources reviewed here are from 2025, so check the game’s update status on your console (in the PS5 library, select the game and look for an update option, or check the game’s version in its details screen) and install any pending update before going further. Do not assume build 1.04 or 1.13 is the newest version.
3. Restart the PS5
PlayStation lists restarting the console among its first steps for a game that will not start. Use the restart option from the power menu, not just closing the game, and then try the game again. If the problem returns after a restart, continue with the next steps.

PlayStation’s launch guidance recommends checking whether the title is installed on USB extended storage and moving it to internal storage. Make this change from the console’s storage settings, then launch the game again. This is a specific recommendation from PlayStation’s general game-start guidance, not a diagnosis of MLB The Show 25 itself.

5. Restore licenses
PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect your data and can help when a game crashes. On the PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then restart the game. Restoring licenses is among the lowest-risk checks because it does not delete the game. PlayStation’s instructions are at PlayStation Support, “How to restore licenses on PlayStation console”.
6. Check PS5 system software and internet connection
PlayStation recommends the latest PS5 system software for launch issues. Update the console’s system software from its settings, separately from the game update in Step 2. If game or app updates fail to download, PlayStation directs you to test your internet connection, so check that before reinstalling anything.
7. For a disc copy, check the disc and drive
If you play from a disc, PlayStation’s general guidance points disc users to its disc troubleshooting page. Inspect the disc for scratches or dirt and watch for drive noise or disc-read messages. A clean disc does not rule out a software crash, and this step does not apply to digital copies or to crashes that appear only in one mode.
8. Delete and reinstall MLB The Show 25
PlayStation recommends deleting and re-downloading a game when launch troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, and its error-code guidance for CE-109573-5 also uses reinstalling. Reinstalling takes time because the full game must be downloaded again, so complete Steps 1 to 7 first. Before deleting, confirm you can re-download the game from your library. Your saved progress is tied to your account, so check your cloud or save-data status before deleting if you are unsure.
9. Use PS5 Safe Mode cache and database options
PlayStation’s general launch steps include Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, and its CE-109573-5 guidance recommends a database rebuild. To use Safe Mode, turn the PS5 fully off, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep, release it, and connect a controller with a USB cable. Choose the option you need from the on-screen menu. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database do not delete your games or saved data, but follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions for your console model because menu wording can change.

10. Escalate with evidence, and reserve reset or system software reinstall for last
If a freeze repeats, submit a bug report to The Show Support. Its freeze guidance, dated March 11, 2025, says: “If your game freezes, please submit a bug report.” The page says the studio will contact you if it needs more information, so include your steps and any video or screenshot you have. For launch failures, error codes, or console-level problems, contact PlayStation Support with the error code, a detailed description, the reproduction steps, and a screenshot or video if possible.
Some error-code flows eventually recommend a reset or a system software reinstall. A reset erases data on console storage, so back up your data first where possible. Treat these as the final options, not early fixes.

An error code can point you to a different route than the general steps above. Check the code against the two PlayStation pages below before choosing an action.
CE-109573-5: game fails to start
PlayStation describes this as an error that occurs when starting a PS5 game. Its recommended order is to restart, delete and reinstall the game, rebuild the database, and then update system software if needed. This maps onto Steps 3, 8, 9, and 6 above, but follow PlayStation’s order on the error page. Details are at PlayStation Support, “PS5 Error Code CE-109573-5”.
CE-108262-9: system software or application-data read error
PlayStation describes this as a read error for system software or application data. Its guidance includes updating system software, reinstalling the affected game or app, rebuilding the database, and potentially resetting the console if the problem continues. Because a reset erases data on console storage, back up first where possible. Details are at PlayStation Support, “PS5 Error Code CE-108262-9”.

Where to send the problem
Different problems belong with different support teams.
| Problem | Where to report it |
|---|---|
| A repeatable in-game freeze or crash during play | The Show Support, through a bug report; see the freeze reporting article |
| Game-start failures, error codes, or console-level problems | PlayStation Support, with the error code and reproduction steps |
| Account, purchase, installation, or suspension issues | PlayStation Support |
The MLB The Show 25 support page on PlayStation’s site confirms the game is sold in Standard and Digital Deluxe editions, gives a March 18, 2025 launch date, and routes gameplay troubleshooting to The Show Support. It is at PlayStation Support, “MLB The Show 25 Support (US)”.
What the available sources do not establish
- The current build number for MLB The Show 25 as of October 2026. The patch notes reviewed date from 2025.
- That any historical patch fixes a crash you are seeing now.
- How common these crashes are. No published crash rate or failure percentage for this issue was found.
- A single cause for all crashes, freezes, or shutdowns.
If a step does not change the result, the symptom and error code you recorded in Step 1 are the most useful information to bring to support.
For the official freeze reporting process, see the The Show Support article. For launch troubleshooting, PlayStation’s main guide is at PlayStation Support.
