Work through the fixes below in order. The first one resolves the most reported problems, and it costs nothing but a fresh download.
Know which build you should be running
Pokémon Añil is a fan-made RPG Maker XP game by EricLostie, released in Spanish and English versions. It is not an official Pokémon product. The only source to download it from is the official site, pokemonanil.com.
The two language versions use separate version numbers, so do not compare them with each other. As of October 2026, the official pages show two different “latest” builds for the English version:

The download page and the changelog disagree on the newest English build. Check both, and install whichever is newer. Treat the auto-update claim as unreliable: one official note says the Spanish version updates itself when opened, while the English translation mod has auto-update disabled and does not support Debug Mode. Redownload manually instead of waiting for an update.

The eight fixes
1. Redownload the latest build
Many crashes reported against older builds were patched in later releases, so a corrupted or outdated copy is the first thing to rule out.
- Open pokemonanil.com and go to the download page.
- Note the version listed for your language, then open the changelog and compare.
- Delete the old game folder, or move it somewhere else. Do not overwrite files in place.
- Download the newest build, which is Spanish v4.13 or the newer English build from step 2.
Expect a large download: 604 MB for Spanish v4.13 and 619 MB for English v4.0.2, according to the download page.
2. Extract the full archive to a normal folder
Running the game from inside a zip file, or from a partly extracted folder, is a common reason for startup failures. The game is distributed as an archive and launched from its .exe file, with its built-in launcher and emulator included in the folder.

- Right-click the downloaded archive and choose Extract All (or your archive tool’s equivalent).
- Extract to a simple path such as
C:GamesPokemonAnil. Avoid protected locations such as Program Files, which can block the game from writing its save files. - Confirm that the folder contains Game.exe and its supporting files together. Do not move Game.exe out on its own.
3. Fix a language or region conflict
The developer added a workaround to the game folder in version 2.02 for players who cannot start the game because their PC uses a language other than the one expected. Check the changelog for the exact file that was added, and follow the instructions it describes. If your Windows display language or regional format is set to something unusual, apply the workaround before changing any system settings, so you can tell whether it made a difference.
4. Restart the PC
A restart clears stalled processes and locked files left behind by a previous failed launch. This is a generic troubleshooting step rather than a documented fix for this game, but it costs little and should be done before the more involved steps.
5. Run Game.exe as administrator
- Right-click Game.exe in the game folder and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Tick Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply, then OK, and launch the game again.
This setting stays on until you change it, so you do not need to repeat it at every launch. Use the Compatibility tab on Game.exe itself, not on a shortcut.
6. Update graphics drivers and install the Visual C++ runtimes
The game runs on an RPG Maker XP-based engine, so out-of-date graphics drivers and missing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages can stop it from starting. Update your graphics driver through the manufacturer’s own software or site. Then install the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages from Microsoft. Reboot after installing them. One reader who reported a startup failure said they had already done this, and it did not resolve their problem, so treat this step as a prerequisite rather than a guaranteed cure.
7. Allow the folder through antivirus and try compatibility mode
Security software sometimes quarantines or blocks the launcher’s components, especially in a fan game that has not been code-signed by a large publisher. Add the game folder to your antivirus exclusions, then restore any files it quarantined from the game folder. Only do this with the official archive you downloaded from the official site.

8. If it still fails, collect the exact error and test on a stable Windows build
Two failures are reported more than others, and neither has a confirmed fix:
- “LoadLibrary failed with error 87: The parameter is incorrect.” A reader reported this on launch on a Windows 11 Insider Preview build (26200 was mentioned). The crash happens before the game starts, so no log file is written. The reader had already tried a fresh download, file checks, Visual C++ runtimes, administrator mode, Windows 8 compatibility mode, and disabling antivirus. Insider builds are preview software, so if you are on one, switch to a stable release and retest.
- Black screen or a very long startup error. Individual readers reported these with the latest English version. Note the exact error text and your Windows build, then report them through the official site or its comments.
These reports are individual accounts, not measured crash rates. No official statement on them exists as of this writing.

When you report a crash, include the language version and build number, the exact error text or a description of where the game stops, your Windows edition and build (found under Settings > System > About), and whether you ran the game as administrator. Those four details let the developer tell a version problem from a system problem.

Ignore unofficial download sites and “patched” files. Fan games are frequently repackaged, and an altered executable is a common reason a game that worked on one PC fails on another.
Does this always work? No. The developer’s documented fixes resolve specific bugs in specific builds, while the startup errors above remain unexplained. If you have followed Fixes 1 through 7 on a current stable Windows release and the game still will not start, the error text you collect in Fix 8 is the most useful thing you can send.
