Starfield is worth returning to in 2026, and the strongest reason is newer than the 2025 case. Bethesda Game Studios’ April 2026 Free Lanes update changed how ships move through a star system, widened crafting and customization, and was added to the PlayStation 5 version. This piece revisits the game as it stands in October 2026 and notes where the 2025 picture has been superseded.
What changed after 2025
The May 2025 patch, update 1.15.216, was a real step. It added Very Low display settings, features for Creations and Creator uploads, and fixes to quests, vehicles, the UI, and Shattered Space. It is no longer the latest update. The change that matters for a returning player came in April 2026 with Free Lanes, which Bethesda describes as its largest set of gameplay changes since launch on the company’s own overview page.

Free Lanes: what changes in play
Cruise mode between planets
Free Lanes adds a cruise mode that lets players travel through open space or to points of interest between planets within a single star system, according to Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 overview. Before this, moving around a system was largely a matter of planet-to-planet jumps. Cruise mode turns the space between destinations into part of the experience. Whether that feels like an improvement depends on how much you enjoy flying your ship rather than skipping straight to a landing.
Space points of interest and encounters
The update also adds points of interest and encounters in space. These give shipboard play a reason beyond transit, which is the main reason Bethesda gives for revisiting exploration. Bethesda does not describe their frequency or rewards in the material used here, so treat them as a feature to discover rather than a guaranteed loop.

Crafting and customization
Bethesda lists several additions to equipment and ship systems:
- X-Tech crafting support for weapons and armor.
- Additional quality tiers for crafted gear.
- Rank 4 legendary effects.
- Upgrade modules for ship and outpost systems, with related changes across those systems.
For players who stopped because builds felt thin, these are the most concrete reasons to return.
Free updates versus paid expansions
Bethesda’s exact statement is: “All the content in the Free Lanes update is free for all players.” It appears in the company’s April 7, 2026 overview, which does not name an individual speaker for that line. Two story expansions are separate paid products. Terran Armada is a story DLC with repeatable content. Shattered Space is a separate story expansion centred on House Va’ruun’s home world, Va’ruun’kai, and the aftermath of a vortex at Dazra. Neither is part of the free update.

| Option | What it includes | Format and platform notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free Lanes update | Cruise mode, space points of interest and encounters, crafting and customization expansion | Free for all players; included in the PS5 version released from April 2026 |
| Standard Edition (PS5) | Base game only | Physical or digital on PS5 |
| Premium Edition (PS5) | Base game, Terran Armada, and Shattered Space | Format not stated in Bethesda’s PS5 edition information |
| Premium Edition Upgrade (PS5) | Terran Armada, Shattered Space, and digital extras | Digital only; requires the base game |
| Shattered Space (PC) | Story expansion set in Va’ruun’kai, following the aftermath of the Dazra vortex | Bethesda’s 2024 announcement lists an SSD and 125 GB of available storage; see the platform section below |
If you already own the base game, the Premium Edition Upgrade is the relevant option on PS5, since it requires the base game and adds both expansions in digital form. Check the edition contents on your platform’s store page before buying, because the rows above describe PS5 editions only, apart from the PC requirement.
Platform and setup
PlayStation 5
Bethesda announced the PS5 version of Starfield on April 7, 2026, and says it includes the major updates released up to that date, including Free Lanes. Physical and digital editions are offered, as shown in the table above.
PC and Shattered Space storage
Bethesda’s 2024 Shattered Space announcement lists an SSD and 125 GB of available storage as PC requirements. That is a listed requirement for the expansion, not advice that every returning player needs new storage. Compare your drive against it before buying anything.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
How much has been fixed and added
Bethesda’s April 2026 overview gives the following figures. They are the publisher’s own counts and have not been independently audited:
- More than a dozen patches have been released since launch.
- The patches contain thousands of fixes. Bethesda does not give an exact count.
- There are over 1,000 Creations from Bethesda Game Studios and Verified Creators. This figure changes as new content is uploaded, so check the current count in-game or on Bethesda’s site.
Who should go back now
Return now if
- You already own the base game and enjoyed exploring or building ships and outposts.
- Cruise travel and expanded crafting are the features that would bring you back.
- You play on PS5 or PC and are comfortable with the platform details above.
Test before committing if
- You left the game because of performance problems. The sources used here do not establish that every past issue is resolved, so try a short session before buying any expansion.
- You want the story expansions. They are separate purchases, and the Premium options are only worth it if you intend to play both.
- You do not own the game. The Standard Edition is the simplest entry point on PS5, and the Free Lanes content is included at no extra cost.
For most readers who already own the base game, Free Lanes is the reason to return. The paid expansions are a separate decision.
